Setting the Stage for Change.

Comprehensive plans lack details in how to begin addressing the items in the plan. We've identified three focus areas that you can start working on today to take immediate action, and through self assessment and measurement, improve conditions on the ground. In turn, these improvements will raise the civic pride of the community.

What to expect from Downtown Playbook

Downtown Playbook is a mix of training and community activities facilitated through technology. We believe that the community must lead their own change and have self determination; through seeking community involvement and self-assessment, communities will take ownership and truly experience civic pride. Below we'll show you activities that are included in each pillar of the Downtown Playbook.

Local Ownership: Property Inventory Assessment

To understand current local ownership, as a baseline, we’ve determined that a Property Inventory is a necessary step to take. We will provide the tools necessary for you to conduct a property inventory assessment. We will also provide you with online tools that you can use to capture your inventory data, attach images of properties, and other features that will let you track changes over time.

Aesthetics: Block Walks

Block walks are a punch list for the community. Give residents the opportunity to provide input about their surroundings.

Block Walks are self organized and focus only on the public realm. They should identify and catalog (via photos) aesthetics that are considered blight, a safety issue, or against design standards.

Once cataloging occurs, the list of locations is prioritized for repair/remediation/cleanup.

Social Opportunity: Community Programming

What current opportunities do residents have today to convene socially within your community or district? With the help of residents and private realm, identify all existing opportunities you have. Once this is complete, identify programming gaps and find people in your community who are interested in making more opportunities for the missing interest and age groups. Turn this into a community calendar that you can use as a resource on your website for residents and businesses to promote their events.
